GORP Guests Jene Galvin, Urban Backpacker GORP Guest from January 31 to February 20, 2000
Jene Galvin with the Alaska Range behind him. |
|
Jene Galvin is a true wilderness guy: he's spent time in in the backcountry of Alaska, Montana, and the California desert. But as he puts it,"We can't all jet away every weekend just to sleep outside, or to test that new triple-layer rain parka, or to get a healthy, full-load workout."
Jene's solution? Urban backpacking! Jene has taken to tramping the hills of his native Cincinatti, pitching his tent next to police stations and the backyards of understanding friends.
Jene Galvin is a freelance writer and radio talk show host. A backpacker for 30 years and an instructor at the local Sierra Club backpack school, he has hiked extensively in America, including sections of the Appalachian Trail. His life goal is to gradually fill every square inch of his basement with backcountry gear.
Jene was a GORP guest from January 31 to February 20, 2000. He discussed his experiences as an urban backpacker. . . and found some long lost relatives.
