Dr. Paul Auerbach smiling with a friend |
Paul S. Auerbach, M.D. fell in love with the wilderness when he served as an extern at Fort Belknap in Harlem, Montana in the summer of 1975."I'd never been west of Pennsylvania. Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks were paradise. I spent every free moment hiking, backpacking, and exploring. Those few months led me to a career in emergency medicine and then wilderness medicine." Paul finished medical school and trained at Dartmouth and UCLA. While a resident, he conceived and co-edited the first edition of Wilderness Medicine, which has evolved through three editions into the definitive textbook on wilderness and environmental medicine for health care professionals."Most of my friends wanted something less than ten pounds that they could carry with them on their adventures, so I wrote Medicine for the Outdoors. It has become the bible for laypersons." Everyone who ventures outdoors needs to be knowledgeable about health, safety, and first aid, so GORP is particularly pleased to have Paul as our forum guest from May 31 to June 20, answering questions on wilderness medicine. You can take a peek at his book in our feature excerpt, and learn what Paul has to say about musculoskeletal injuries and snakebites.
Paul is recognized as one of the world's leading authorities on wilderness medicine. In addition to being the sole editor of Wilderness Medicine and author of Medicine for the Outdoors, he is author of A Medical Guide to Hazardous Marine Life and a new medical thriller entitled Bad Medicine. An accomplished underwater photographer, he has authored Diving the Rainbow Reefs and An Ocean of Colors. He is a founder and Past President of the Wilderness Medical Society, member of the Board of Directors and consultant on hazardous marine animals to the Divers Alert Network, and a member of the National Medical Committee for the National Ski Patrol System.Paul is a Clinical Professor of Surgery in the Division of Emergency Medicine at Stanford University and is the former Professor and Chief of the Divisions of Emergency Medicine at Stanford and Vanderbilt. He was one of the first co-editors of the Journal of Wilderness Medicine and continues to put in countless volunteer hours as a consultant and advisor to many outdoor-related organizations. In addition, he is the Life Sciences Advisor to garage.com and Medical Editor for Dive Training Magazine.
He, his wife, and three children spend as much time as possible as a family in the mountains or the ocean. Paul's writing and teaching takes him all around the globe, and whenever possible, the family comes along. His greatest joy is introducing others to beautiful places, where they can gain the same sense of fulfillment that he has achieved by making the outdoors a safer place for all.
Dr. Paul Auerbach will be GORP's forum guest from May 31 to June 20, fielding questions on wilderness medicine, first aid, and staying safe and sound in the outdoors.
