Ex Officio Traveling Convertible Pants
By Ted Alan Stedman
In the morning I checked into a ritzy hotel in Jaco, Costa Rica. Soon afterward I was horseback riding through the jungle. From lobby to saddle, my companion the whole way was Ex Officio's Traveling Convertible Pant, an extremely lightweight trouser that does double duty in the fashion and performance departments.
The pant is made from Nycott Twill, a rough-and-tumble, wind- and wrinkle-resistant nylon known for its speed-dry ability. An elastic waistband, front pleats, key pocket, coin catcher pocket (men's only), and something called a"French Fly" give these pants a street-smart demeanor. But with features like an inseam gusset (read: unrestricted leg movement), ankle zip for easy on/off over boots, an assortment of zippered and Velcro mesh-lined pockets, and cargo-style front pockets, this trouser is all business in the bush.
Ex Officio's exclusive Pack Strap tabs let you stash the removable pant legs or other clothing items above your rear. The tabs have two snap positions, working as holders or additional belt loops. All in all, the Traveling Convertible Pant is an excellent warm-weather choice when rugged simplicity and a modicum of fashion are in order. Available in men's and women's sizes.
Price: $74 High mark: Teflon fabric treatment helps repel even oily stains. Low mark: Super-loose cut may be a bit excessive for some.
