Duds for Globetrotters
Expect Sharp Looks and Cool Comfort from Today's Travel Togs
By Ted Alan Stedman

Hoisting a bunch of bananas in Santa Elena
High-tec togs keep Ted cool in steamy Costa Rica
Blame it on the adventure-travel duds available a decade ago, but I used to emerge from a few days of romping around in tropical heat and humidity looking like an extra in a bad Tarzan movie. My cotton camouflage and safari duds were invariably damp, smelly, and stained, not to mention as wrinkled as if I'd been sleeping in them. I could hardly stand myself, and I'm sure my travel companions couldn't stand me either.

What a difference ten years can make. Adventure travelers no longer have to endure the indignities of sweaty clothing or, heaven forbid, an ill-placed wrinkle. Travel wear today is made with the same tricks of the trade you'd expect from high-tech mountain apparel. The styles favor unrestricted body movement, and include advanced fabrics and plenty of vents to keep body parts cool. Throw in snappy styling and a crisp color palette and you've got functional, lightweight clothing that's super packable, wicks moisture away, and dries in minutes.

Following are top-shelf wardrobe choices that make the cut for any adventure, whether it's sweaty trail trekking in banana-latitude countries or flailing to a Jimmy Buffet tune at your neighborhood pub.
