Atlas Snow Tracker
Atlas Snow Tracker
If ever there was a snowshoe designed with heavy, wet snow in mind, this is it. Spend any time tromping through"Cascade Cement," "Sierra Cement," or the glop that falls in West Virginia on up into New England, and you know that sometimes the only reason to wear snowshoes is for their traction, not flotation. Hence the Snow Tracker and Mountain Tracker, which are essentially snowshoes minus the snowshoe.

Atlas took a pair of snowshoes, kept the bindings and cleats, and tossed the rest away. Net result: crampons that fit any boot.

The Snow Tracker is meant for the casual day-hiker who needs traction on hard-packed snow and ice while hiking moderate-to-steep trails. The Mountain Tracker is a more aggressive model, with a broader array of cleats and spikes, a heavy-duty heel strap, and a rockered bottom that allows natural striding, not the bow-legged gait forced by most snowshoes. Both models fit virtually any boot, from light day-hikers to heavy mountaineering boots.

Price: The Snow Tracker goes for $59, while the Mountain Tracker sells for $69.
