How Do I Get an Outdoor-Gear Internship?

Kevin's Question:

Kevin SalysDo you know how I could go about getting a technical internship with an outdoor gear company for this coming summer? I'm a mechanical engineer at the University of Colorado in Boulder, and I'm an avid outdoor enthusiast. I'd love the chance to apply my schooling to work on gear in an industry that I love.

Expert Answer:

I think your best bet is doing some legwork, contacting companies, and asking them directly. It won't be easy, but just try your luck.

The usual job-hunting rule about approaching companies and having some ideas ready about what YOU can do for THEM applies. Knowing their product line, asking intelligent questions, or having intelligent suggestions ready might make the difference.

You might run into the"How dare you suggest improvements to my masterpiece" mindset, or the good old "N.I.H. Factor" (Not Invented Here). Also, you may run into problems with manufacturers concerned about your potential access to proprietary information. Most likely, though, you won't.

Do you have any nifty gear items or modifications to gear that you can show or talk about — a "portfolio"? Have you thought about whether you want to be in any particular category-stoves, for example, the sewn-goods field, or a mix? Good luck!
