What are the"10 Essentials"?
Ed's Question:
There seems to be some disagreement on the subject of what constitutes the so-called 10 essentials. Can you once and for all settle this issue?

Annie's Answer:
Back when I started getting serious about guiding, the"Bible" was Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills, and its "commandments" were the Ten Essentials. The idea is if you've got these basics, you should be able to muddle through an unintended bivouac or help somebody out of a jam. Knowing how to use them, plus your common sense, are Essentials number 11 and 12. Nowadays I'd add water purification tablets to the list, and maybe a little repair kit.
