After taking an Outward Bound (OB) course eight years ago, Jack Igelman discovered the career path he wanted to follow. He's been employed by a handful of outdoor-oriented organizations, including three years of backcountry work with at-risk and adjudicated youth. He currently works for North Carolina Outward Bound School, where he is an instructor and course director. Jack has recently begun writing, and has found success there as well. You can find his work in Paddler, Rock and Ice, Hooked on the Outdoors, and Blue Ridge Country.
In His Own Words
The Job "As an instructor I've worked courses from five days to 21 days long. 24-7 with no breaks. This past summer I worked exclusively as a course director. It's a desk/field position. I supervise instructors and ultimately ensure the safety and quality of Outward Bound courses."
How He Got There "Eight years ago I was a student on an OB course. I was hooked after that. I knew that this is how I wanted to earn a living. Definitely taking an OB course was a major catalyst for my decision to be where I am. I also spent three years working for a"hoods-in-the-woods"style wilderness program. Those kids taught me a lot!"
How to Get His Job "Every Outward Bound school has a staffing coordinator. That's one place to start. Conferences held by organizations like the Association For Experiential Education (AEE) are a great starting point, too. Many of the camps, schools, and programs that attend AEE conferences are looking for folks to fill jobs. The AEE also publishes a monthly jobs clearinghouse."
Pros "The community of Outward Bound people is amazing. It's rare to get so many people together who are so passionate about what they do. I also enjoy the connections I make with student from all walks of life. And, of course, I'm outside."
Cons "It's not as glamorous as some think. Picture yourself on day ten of a 21-day course with a dozen fifteen year olds. Its raining, your lunch is moldy, and some kid is telling you he's ready to go home. It's the most challenging job I've ever had."
