Top 10 Outdoor Music Fests
The world's hottest places to enjoy sounds under the sun and stars.
By Ryan Willhite

There's something about the outdoors that makes a great music festival even better. Spread out on a lawn or beach and let the sounds of jazz, folk, blues, or rock come floating in on a breeze. Woodstock started the trend; since then, the number of outdoor festivals has—quite literally—blown through the roof, to the point where you can find them all over the world. Here are the best.

*JVC Jazz Festival (Newport, Rhode Island)
August. This is America's big one: Since 1954, Newport has drawn the hottest stars in jazz, rhythm and blues, country, and rock together for a multi-day jam session. Performers play in a huge park that boasts two stages, while the audience listens from reserved seating or on the lawn. www.festivalproductions.net/jvc/jvcnewpmain.html

*Central Park Summerstage (New York City)
June/July/August. America's best-known urban park boasts a summertime full of artistic performances. Concertgoers come together on the lawn and the bleachers of this open-air stage and take in diverse acts ranging from one-person theater productions to Lyle Lovett. Bonus: Most performances are free of charge.

*Sinbad's Soul Music Festival (Caribbean)
June. The comedian Sinbad began his Soul Music Festival by combining the classic soul acts of the '70s with today's hottest acts in rhythm and blues. The festival moves to a different Caribbean Island each year, where thousands of people hit the beaches and sway to the smooth sounds of soul music.

*Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland)
July. It takes Swiss precision to organize the world's largest music fest, but it's always a winner. Taking place over two weeks, this festival attracts artists like B.B. King and Alanis Morissette, along with more than 200,000 music lovers, who sit on the shores of Lake Geneva where they can gaze at the foothills of the Alps.

*Copenhagen Jazz Festival (Denmark)
July. The Danes know how to celebrate jazz—this entire festival is devoted to it. Up-and-comers as well as old-timers have been goin' to the woodshed here since 1979. And it's an awesome urban setting: Many of the day concerts are performed in the city streets, among the canals and historic homes.

*Montreal Jazz Festival (Canada)
June/July. It's a can't-miss for music lovers: Some 300 (!) free concerts shake up the streets of Montreal over 11 summer days. With international and domestic artists, the city's diverse culture, and a lettin'-loose-on-the-street feeling, this is one of the world's most unique festivals. www.montrealjazzfest.com

*Telluride Bluegrass Festival (Telluride, Colorado)
June. It's the Woodstock of the West: With four days of bluegrass-based acoustic music, this blast of a festival takes place in head-swimming altitudes. Camp gear in tow, concertgoers flock here in VW buses and SUVs for four days of freedom and the best collection of bluegrass musicians in the world. www.bluegrass.com/Pages/telluridehome.html

*Barossa Music Festival (Barossa, Australia)
September/October. Down Under, it's all about the wine. And what better way to enjoy an Aussie Shiraz than with this annual festival in the Barossa region of Southern Australia, near Adelaide. Artists perform everything from classical chamber music to modern-day folk music out among the wineries. Tired of the music? Go for a tasting—or two.

*Chilean la Viqa Music Festival (Valparamso, Chile)
February. Celebrate the history and legacy of popular Latin American music during this five-day festival in the seaside resort of Valparamso. Spread your towel out on the beach and take in the music of the world's top Latin stars. Just be warned that over its 42-year history, the festival's grown to include non-Latin acts as well, such as (oddly) the Backstreet Boys.

*Standard Bank National Arts Festival (Grahamstown, South Africa)
June/July. Ignore the corporate sponsorship: This 11-day festival focuses on everything from jazz to techno music, with a dash of theater performances and poetry readings thrown in for good measure. The festival takes over this city near the southern coast: Concerts are performed at schools, restaurants, and churches. Stick to the shows outdoors in the parks.
