Winter Family Getaway Spots

*Kiawah Island, South Carolina

When Robert Redford arrived in Kiawah to direct the movie, The Legend of Bagger Vance, he fell in love with this tranquil island getaway 21 miles from Charleston. Visitors love to rave about it, calling it the"Pebble Beach of the East Coast." National Geographic Traveler called it the second most romantic beach in America.

Kiawah is for everyone, not just golfers and lovers. Our family loves it, so much that we made it our destination for several winter family reunions, including two Thanksgivings and a Christmas.

The great thing about Kiawah is that it's not an obvious choice for a winter getaway — spring and summer are its peak seasons. But there's plenty of sunshine all year long, and if you come in winter, you don't have to fight the crowds typical of some of the more popular tropical spots. It's too cold for swimming in winter but there's still plenty to do.

Gorgeous sunsets and surf, sand sculpting, bike riding, tennis, and championship golf — all of these await at Kiawah. One of my favorite activities here is wading and walking along the ten miles of beach — a beach that still offers fascinating seashells for beachcombers.

My other favorite pastime here is riding bikes on the beach. The sand is so firm that you can ride along on the sand. There are also more than 30 miles of trails for hiking and biking.

Whatever the season, we've had some of our very best family getaways at Kiawah.
