East Meets West Virginia |
 |
 | Snowshoe, West Virginia |
My family hails from West Virginia, and let me tell you, there's a reason they call it the Mountain State. That means if you live on the East Coast, you don't have to head West for a great winter vacation. Instead, head to West Virginia, where the scenery is beautiful and unspoiled.
With an average 180 inches of annual snowfall and a summit elevation of 4,848', Snowshoe, West Virginia, is a hidden East Coast gem. In addition to the abundant natural snow and great mountain terrain, there's plenty of snowmaking too, ensuring that the slopes are open November through April.
What's more, Snowshoe has recently gotten a facelift, creating new terrain, lifts, programs, and even a new village full of lodging, restaurants, and shopping. The bottom line is 57 slopes and trails with a total lift capacity of 22,500 skiers per hour.
Check out the many family programs, including child care, ski and snowboard lessons, private and group lessons, and"Night Moves," an introductory snowboarding program for the whole family.
Resources Snowshoe, West Virginia
For skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, dog sled tours, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, horse-drawn sleigh rides, and tubing, Snowshoe is the place. Visit www.SnowshoeMtn.com or call 1-877-441-4FUN for more information.
For a special treat, book kids ages 5-12 in the Kids Night Out Program (with crafts, snowshoeing, stories, and scavenger hunts) while Mom and Dad have their own night to remember. Travel by snowmobile to the Sunrise Backcountry Hut and dine in the backcountry. The truly adventurous can even stay in backcountry huts.
If you're out and about, don't miss nearby Monongahela National Forest, which features three gorgeous wilderness areas: Dolly Sods, Laurel Forks, and Otter Creek. Enjoy beautiful views on the forest's Highland Scenic Highway, or get some history on West Virginia's Civil War Auto Tour.
