Kid's-Eye View: Montana
Big Sky Kid-Style
By Will Peregoy
(with help from his mom, Alice Cary)

Last June GORP Family Expert Alice Cary, her husband, and their six-year-old son took a guided trip in Montana with Adventures Plus. Here are Will's thoughts about their journey, compiled with a little help from Mom.

I was excited when my mom told me we were going to Montana. We looked at the map and saw that it's far away from where we live.

My mom told me there would be lots of tall mountains and that we would go hiking, biking, rafting, and horseback riding. I hadn't been rafting or horseback riding before. It sounded fun.

We also read that there are grizzly bears in Montana. This made me a little nervous.

We left Boston in the afternoon. We said good-bye to my twin sisters. Martha and Cary are one, which is too young for this trip. You have to be six, like me.

After two plane rides we were in Bozeman, Montana. It was dark, so we couldn't see any mountains. By the time we got to our hotel room and went to bed, it was 2:00 a.m., Boston time! I was tired but happy.

A New Friend

The next morning we got picked up by a big Adventures Plus van. There were other families on the trip. Mom told me there would be a seven-year-old boy on the trip. I started looking for him.

Soon Mike, his sister, and parents showed up. Mike is from New York City and likes baseball just like I do. It was fun having a buddy during the trip.

We met a lot of new people. Dan Austin owns Adventures Plus and there were three more guides: Reno, Traci, and Ryan. They were all fun.

I rode a trailer bike with my dad. . . . This was neat, except sometimes Dad didn't go fast enough.
First we went to the Museum of the Rockies. There was a neat dinosaur exhibit and a planetarium show. One of the neatest things was the old house. People had really lived in it a long time ago, and you could go inside and see all the old furniture. I liked pumping water from the pump.

After lunch we went biking. I rode a trailer bike with my dad. We have one at home, so I was used to it. This was neat, except sometimes Dad didn't go fast enough. He complained on the hills. I liked to ask how fast we were going and how far we had ridden.

We rode for 16 miles and then had a picnic in a meadow. The goldfish crackers and cheese tasted great.
