Where to Go
By Alice Cary, GORP Family Expert

With the whole world waiting to be explored, where should your family start?

Nelson Lakes, New Zealand
Venture to family-friendly
New Zealand

Helen Truszkowski, the originator and author behind the Take the Kids... series of family guidebooks, has explored many corners of the world with her son, George. This resident of London and Spain recommends three areas as being especially good for touring families:

* Southern France,
* New Zealand, and
* Northern California.

Why these places? Because all three have superb resources, natural beauty, safety, and diversity. "In choosing these three spots," she says, "I've considered the fact that the kids might want to take a break from 'nature' and hook up with civilization once in a while."

Narrowing It Down

How can families narrow down the many choices of places to go? "The most important thing to remember is that time, money, and your family's own special needs influence what you will manage and what you will enjoy," Truszkowski says. "Think about places you might enjoy and feel relaxed in. Then consider whether there will be any scope for your children there. Do not expect to come up with a decision overnight. Make an informed choice and do it in your own good time."

No matter where you decide to go, planning ahead
is key.

No matter where you decide to go, Truszkowski notes, planning ahead of time is key."You need to become a sort of Sherlock Holmes," she says. "Investigate, inquire, find out everything you can from the wealth of available travel resources." Many such resources are noted in her book, Take the Kids Traveling: Survive and Enjoy!

Tours & Travel Agents

Some families like to plan every detail of their own trip; others prefer to rely on a tour operator. Each method has its rewards. Our own family has enjoyed both types of trips. For busy families, working with a travel agent and going on a guided trip can be well worth the added costs (see Pay to Play).

Truszkowski offers her own insights about how to best use a travel agent or tour operator: "Unfortunately, travel agents who really know the overseas family adventure market are few and far between. Most have a vested interest in booking you on specific airlines or into large chain hotels and resorts. By steering you toward favored suppliers, you may not always get the best deal. Conscientious agents and operators will be dedicated to finding the best overseas destination, and facilities to suit you, at the right price, and will have their own first-hand experience of the countries you are interested in. Do not settle for anything less, and never feel pressured into making a decision."
