DESTINATIONS
Family Weekender: Denver
Mountain Biking
at Winter Park

By Bill Scanlon

The thrill of downhill without the agony of uphill is now available for the mountain-biking family. Fifteen dollars buys an all-day chairlift pass up the Zephyr Lift at Winter Park.

Lift operators put the family on one chair, their bicycles on the trailing chair. Once on top, the kids can go screaming down a black expert run, while Mom and Dad take the gentle blue run-or vice versa.

The trails aren't the ski slopes themselves, but single-track trails and cat-track trails that cut across the slopes.

A word of caution: be wary of mountain goats. They're beautiful to gaze at, but ornery if you run them over.
