Family Weekender: Denver
Climbing the Walls at Rock'n & Jam'n
By Bill Scanlon
Rock climbing can be a dangerous sport and requires expert instruction and guides. So to get started, enroll the family in an indoor rock climbing class.
Rock'n & Jam'n, just north of Denver, offers climbing instruction for all levels, as well as locker rooms and showers.
"A lot of the kids are fearless,'' says owner Deb Grass.
If mom or dad is an experienced belayer, they can belay for the small kids. Otherwise, the instructors will teach belaying to anyone over 12.
Before long, the sewing-machine shakes will give way to confident spidering up and across the textured walls. Instructors will determine when the family is ready for an outdoor adventure and direct them to qualified outdoor guides and safe spots.
