We're all used to seeing rangers around our parks and out on the trails. They're there to answer our questions and make sure we're safe and enjoying our trip. Sometimes they'll ask a few questions, such as"Do you need a permit?" or "Have you got enough water for this hike?" But if you're walking around the battlefield at Chickamauga National Military Park, the questions are harder and the stakes are higher.

"What was the name of the army commanded by General Braxton Bragg in 1863?" That was our first question from the General Bragg Trail Guide. Chickamauga offers six trails, each with a corresponding set of questions. You can pick up the maps and questions from a ranger at the visitor center. After you hike the trails, return your answers to the ranger to receive a patch for each trail. The trail maps will lead you to park displays where you'll find the answers to your quiz.

Since the trail guides were designed for Boy Scouts, they may be a bit too long for most families to complete in one trip. Still, this outdoor museum, with its endless collection of cannons, is a unique combination of history and recreation.

Go Guide:
Chickamauga National Military Park

*
Getting there: Take I-75 north nearly to Chattanooga, then go west on GA 2. Turn south on US 27 in Fort Oglethorpe, then continue south into the park.

*
Reference: Chickamauga National Military Park, (706) 866-9241, or visit www.nps.gov/chch.

*
Extra treats: If you've got a crew of miniature conscientious objectors on your hands, then hit the visitor center to watch a film detailing the historical background of the Civil War battle at Chickamauga. The Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga is another family favorite.
