River Mouth Island Question by Ethan Gelber
The Question:
Idle time for observation on the island at the mouth of the river. The deep waters of the enormous outflow tint the sea and sweeten the salty stir for more than 100 miles. Pulling from more than a thousand tributaries some of them major rivers in their own right the watercourse stretches across the countless miles of a famously rough and tumble selva explored by many an eye: Europeans like Francisco de Orallana, Pedro Teixeira, Charles-Marie de la Condamine, and Alexander von Humboldt, and later former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt. An abundant flora and fauna color and fill the air like nowhere else on the earth.
What is the name of the island where you sit?
The Answer:
The Brazilian Ilha de Marajs is the island at the mouth of the Amazon River. It is the world's largest fluvial island, i.e., an island formed by river-borne deposits. The main course of the Amazon is to the north of the island, but a vast network of smaller channels carry water south to the Para River, an estuary to the south. There are many archaeological digs in the eastern part of the island. Its major city, Soure, can be reached from Belim on the mainland to the south.
The Winners:
This week's first five correct answers came from Molly Brunner, Nate Hawkins, Jan Vandenhende, Gaetano Auricchio, and Fifeplayer. The following people also answered correctly: Jan Carter, Trina Burke, Ed Berkowitz, and William Sprouse.
Special mentions go out to Freaky and Tom (Kayakr) for naming Belim as the nearby important city, and to Dioum Lesenegalais for identifying the Amazon.
Mary gets a nod with the most creative response: "I ain't sitting at an island. I am in Patrick, SC, sitting in my chair at the computer! Now, Patrick may be a very small town with stores on one side of main street and a railroad track on the other side of main street; but, it ain't no island." Thank you Mary.
Other excellent guesses included: New York City, Panama City, Padre Island (Texas), Ile de la Madeleine (on the St. Lawrence River in Canada), and Cuba.
THANKS for your contributions!
