Both Great Oceans
Question by Ethan Gelber
The Question:
There is a subway station in New York City called Atlantic Avenue. One block away is another station called Pacific Street. A tunnel actually links the Atlantic Avenue and Pacific Street stations. There is even one point in the hallway from which you can see both Atlantic and Pacific.
Believe it or not, there is another place in North America from which it is possible to see both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Where is this place?
The Answers:
Irazz is a volcano in central Costa Rica. On a clear day, both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans can be seen from its 11,257-foot (3,431-meter) summit. This is the only place in North America from which there is such a view.
The Winners:
The first five responses we had to this question came from Steve Yates, Karen Newton, Rachel Moir, Jean-Pierre Magnan, and Janice Lynds, all winners of the promised bag of GORP.com GORP. Honorable mention goes to Angelo Sciulli and Brian Palmer, who also submitted correct answers.
There is one special "most creative" call-out to Carolyn Keany for naming Monopoly and A&P (Atlantic and Pacific) supermarkets as likely places for both ocean sightings.
Other guesses included: Baru Volcan (Panama), the Kennedy Space Center, the Continental Divide in northwest Wyoming, Two Oceans Pass (Wyoming), Panama (and its canal), and on television. While it is technically possible to see both oceans from the space shuttle or from the tip of Argentina's Cape Horn, neither of these is in North America.
