Telluride, located in a scenic valley deep in the San Juan Mountains, has long been described as an up-and-coming resort. Now it''s arrived. Telluride Mountain Village, a glamorous ultra-upscale resort development in the heart of the ski terrain, is the perfect counterpoint to the quaint and historic town of Telluride. A three-year-old transportation gondola links the two communities day and night, eliminating a tedious drive. The ski terrain features fabled steeps and bump runs, but actually three-quarters of the snow-kissed terrain is rated for novice and intermediate skiers and snowboarders. Telluride has a small airport, and a larger, more weather-resistant field is in Montrose.

Where: Telluride Mountain Village and Telluride are six miles apart via road and 65 miles from Montrose and its airport.

What''s There: 3,165-foot vertical drop (3,522-foot hike-to vertical), 66 trails, 1,050 acres, one gondola, one"chondola," four high-speed quad chairlifts, two triple chairlifts, two doubles, one platterpull, one Magic Carpet, one of the West''s biggest snowboard parks.

What''s New: There are three new lifts, including two state-of-the-art high-speed quads and one triple, two new hotels, and new upscale mountain dining at San Sophia Station.
