Monarch celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. The full name of this high, snow-blessed area is Monarch Ski and Snowboard Resort, signaling its commitment to riders. It is a small and casual ski area whose vertical is modest, and whose nearest lodging is three miles down the road, but it also carries a big reputation for excellent snow. In addition to lift-served skiing and snowboarding on a high bowl, Monarch operates Great Divide snowcat skiing for those who want to play in the prodigious powder.
Where: 130 miles from Colorado Springs, on U.S. 50.
What''s There: 1,171-foot vertical drop, 54 trails, 670 acres, one quad chairlift, four double chairlifts, snowboard park, snowcat skiing adjacent to lift-served area.
What''s New: Monarch has added its first fixed-grip quad, the first new lift since 1981. It is located near the Garfield chair, runs from base to summit, and will also serve the south side of the area.
Season: Mid-November to Mid-April.
Snowboarding: Terrain park on the Ricochet Trail. Clinics are available.
Terrain: Beginner 21%, Intermediate 37%, Advanced 42%, Expert 0%.
Average Annual Snowfall: Monarch receives approximately 350 inches of snow per season.

Ski School: The ski school offers a wide variety of lessons for all ages and levels. A beginner package of rental equipment, lifts and two-hour lesson is $47 for skiers and $54 for snowboarders. There are 95 ski school staff members. This resort offers handicap ski school lessons.
