Copper ranks as one of Colorado''s best-designed skiing mountains, with an excellent lift network, a great variety of runs for all abilities, and in terms of skiable acreage, Summit County''s biggest area. The skiing sprawls across adjacent Union Peak and Copper Peak as well as the bowls and gullies beside and between them. Copper Bowl, with two lifts, offers 600 acres of challenging high-alpine terrain. Copper''s day-care facilities and kids'' ski school are tops, and the compact walk-about village is family-friendly and is being redeveloped with additional lodging, dining, and shops.

Where: 75 miles west of Denver, just off I-70.

What''s There: 2,601-foot vertical drop, 125 trails, 2,433 acres, one 6-person high-speed lift, four high-speed quads, five triples, five doubles, six surface lifts, two half-pipes and one terrain park.

What''s New: Added to the $66 million worth poured into Copper Mountain last winter is $67 million for phase two of the base redevelopment. Three buildings, including an opulent and spacious day lodge at the base of the year-old Super Bee lift, form the core of what will be sparkling new base village, and the School House at Union Creek, a large new children''s center, with day care and ski school facilities, anchors what will be the future West Village development. Copper is owned by Intrawest, the Vancouver-based corporation that put Whistler and other resorts on the map.

Season: Mid-November to early May.
