Paddling Our Wild Shores
Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore
Indiana
By Alan Kesselheim

The Indiana Dunes are a striking section of sand deposits and exposed shoreline lying between Gary and Michigan City, at the southern tip of Lake Michigan. It is heavily visited during the summer season and offers boaters only limited opportunities. Camping is quite restricted, many of the beaches are crowded, and the shoreline is fairly unvaried. Indiana Dunes State Park sits in the center of the National Lakeshore and links together the longest stretch of continuous protected shore (roughly 12 miles).

Frankly, this is one of the few shorelines that is arguably more interesting to explore inland than from the vantage point of a canoe or kayak.
