Paddling Our Wild Shores
Cumberland Island National Seashore
Georgia
By Alan Kesselheim

Cumberland Island lies just off southern Georgia, separated from the mainland by Cumberland Sound and the Cumberland River and accessible only by passenger ferry (which won't carry canoes or kayaks!) from the town of St. Marys. Paddlers can launch directly from St. Marys and paddle across to the island. Cumberland Island is a mixture of maritime forest, salt marsh, and beach. Although the seashore isn't set up with an eye to accommodating boaters, there are numerous rivers, marshes, and coastal sections to explore. Camping is allowed (permits required).

No supplies are available on the island, and access to drinking water is limited, but the lack of amenities makes it all the more attractive to backcountry users.
