Karen is a hiker's hiker. She has finished the Appalachian, Pacific Crest and Continental Divide Trails — making her one of the few who've completed hiking's"triple crown."

Actually, the answer is just about anywhere. True, dogs are banned from some areas, notably national parks and state parks, as well as many private lands. But hundreds of areas all over the country are open to dogs, especially in national forests. All you have to do is select the location you'd like to hike in and call the agency (you'll find contact information right here on GORP) that manages the land.

If you do hike with a dog, you should keep it leashed. When your dog barks a friendly hello, it could terrify someone up the trail, especially if its greeting is overly exuberant. Dogs also tend to go rushing off after rabbits, deer, and other wildlife—including bears, which is probably not a good idea.

In camp, keep your dog under control, too, especially if you are camped near others. Never let a dog roll around in a spring where other hikers will be getting their drinking water. Finally, be sure to pay attention to your dog's feet, especially on hot days or on rocky ground.
