How Do I Prepare for an AT Thru-Hike?
Rikki's Question:
I was wondering what kind of physical and mental preparation one would need to
undertake to be able to accomplish an AT thru-hike. Also, are
there any good books that would explain how to resupply during the thru-hike?
Rikki Dingman
Karen's Answer:
Rikki, the fact that you're asking these question right at the beginning
means that you're well on your way to becoming one of the small percentage of
people who succeed in a thru-hike.
Virtually any kind of regular exercise routine will help you get in shape
for a long hike. Walking regularly, walking with a pack, taking strenuous
day-hikes, jogging, swimming, aerobics, stair climbing, and treadmills will
all help you build strength and endurance. Mental training is a little
fuzzier. I'd suggest reading a couple of books about people's experiences on
the Appalachian Trail (The Appalachian Trail Conference's store sells a
selection; 304-535-6331) so you get some feel for the challenges. But the
most important thing is to assess your motivation and to consider whether you
really will enjoy living in the woods for six months. Go out on as many
weekend backpacking trips as you can. Is this something you really like? If
it is, you'll better be able to meet the challenges.
Regarding food drops, the Appalachian Trail Thru-Hikers Guide (published
by the Appalachian Trail Conference and compiled by volunteers from the
Appalachian Long Distance Hikers Association) contains information, as does
the AT Workbook for Planning Thru-hikes by Christopher Whalen, also available
from the ATC. You can also find these books at local East Coast outdoor
retailers.
