National Scenic Byways and Other Recreational Drives
Minnesota
Bluff Country Bliss
Two great drives near the Twin Cities: The Great River Road passes through handsome nineteenth century river towns, sleepy villages, and natural areas rich in wildlife. The St. Croix River Valley Drive rambles along the alternately wild and pastoral St. Croix for 60 miles, visiting three state parks and picturesque river towns. See the Southeast Minnesota map for the locations of these drives.
Avenue of Pines
The 39-mile Avenue of Pines has earned its name from the sections of the byway lined with large red or Norway pines planted in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The many lakes viewed through the pines add to the scenic beauty and to water recreation opportunities for fishing, canoeing, and water-skiing. The area is home to nearly 300 nesting bald eagles, as well as osprey, black bear, gray wolf, deer, and raccoon. Nearby sites offer historical interest and, in the summer months, good berry picking. See the Northwest Minnesota and Western Minnesota maps for the location of this drive.
Edge Of The Wilderness Scenic Byway
Leave the urban center of Grand Rapids and enter 75 km (47 miles) of the natural wonders of upper Minnesota, including vistas of flat lowland meadows, swamps and lakes, rolling hills of hardwood forests, and remnants of glaciers long gone. See the Northwest Minnesota and Western Minnesota maps for the location of this drive.
North Shore Drive
A 58-mile segment of US Highway 61 makes up this scenic drive through the Superior National Forest. See the Northeast Minnesota and Eastern Minnesota maps for the location of this drive.
Northwoods Highway
A 22 mile segment of the Minnesota State Highway 38 showcases the beauty of the lakes. See the Northwest Minnesota map for the location of this drive.
The Scenic Highway
28-mile long stretch is comprised of two county roads, Beltrami County Road 39 and Cass County Road 10. See the Northwest Minnesota map for the location of this drive.
Superior National Forest Scenic Drives
| Interesting information on the history, ecosystems, wildlife species, and management activities in the Superior National Forest enhances a visit to the Superior National Forest while enjoying one of
several scenic driving tours.
The Forest Mosaic" auto tour begins 17 miles north of Grand Marais, Minnesota on the Gunflint
Trail. On this tour, you will learn about forest evolution, the types of wildlife that benefit from the various ages and species of trees, and how fire and logging activity contribute to the evolution of the forest.
The North Shore Discovery Tour" begins at Tofte, Minnesota on the Sawbill Trail. Stops along the
route provide interesting stories of the early settlers of the 1890's and how logging and railroads contributed to the development of the area.
In addition to the history, the scenic beauty and wildlife sightings of your drive are bound to make your tour a memorable journey. See the Northeast Minnesota map for the location of these drives. |
