Clem Work and David Nevala —
On the Road and On the Job

Clem Work and David Nevala are the Big Ride Riding Reporter and Riding Photographer. They will post pictures, news, messages, and report memorable events from the ride each day, creating an interactive scrapbook of the entire event and documenting the amazing experience of cross-country cycling. (For more reports from the road, also check out the GORP Big Ride Log.)

Clem Work

Clem has taught reporting, editing, and media law at the University of Montana School of Journalism for the past 10 years. He has more than 20 years of experience working for newspapers such as the Rocky Mountain News in Denver and the Sacramento Bee, and for U.S. News and World Report, where he worked for about nine years as a reporter and editor. Clem holds a law degree from Golden Gate University in San Francisco.

Born in Mexico City, Clem spent much of his youth living overseas, the son of a virus researcher. After stays in Fiji, Egypt, and India, Clem attended high school in Ojai, California, and received a BA from Stanford University in political science.

Clem's wife, Lucia, is also a former journalist at U.S. News. They have two children, Alyssa, 13, and Brendan, 11. Clem also has a daughter, Cecily, 25, who was just married on June 4. The family lived in Kumamoto, Japan, in 199495 while Clem was on a faculty exchange. Now, they live in a log house in the middle of a meadow just 12 minutes from campus in Missoula with three dogs and four frogs. They enjoy skiing in the winter and biking, canoeing, and hiking in their all-too-short summer. Clem is also president of the board of the International Wildlife Film Festival in Missoula.
