Meet the Big Riders
Sharon Grove
By Sharon Grove, Big Ride rider #2029

Words cannot describe my feelings about being a 2000 Big Rider! I have had the desire to ride across the country for many years and when the opportunity arose to do it with the American Lung Association, I couldn't think of anything better. I have asthma and know the suffering all too well of not being able to breathe, and as a result, the incredible importance of the programs of the ALA.

I have lost family members to various lung diseases and have other family members and friends who suffer from asthma. I work as an occupational therapist as well as a massage therapist and am constantly reminded of the increasing number of people struggling to breathe. As a therapist in the Seattle public schools I know many children who suffer from lung disease. It's frightening and it's tragic. When I was young, we needed to move away from Southern California because the poor air quality triggered my brother's asthma so severely that he was hospitalized many times.

I have always enjoyed participating in fund-raising events, including the South Dakota Lung Association Bicycle Trek Classic rides. These events were one of the highlights of the year and were truly inspirational, particularly as a result of the incredible people involved in the event.

Inspire a Big Rider

The Big Ride cyclists are pouring energy into a ride benefiting those unable to do it themselves. Let them know that you appreciate them.

The Big Ride was calling, but the challenge to raise $7,000 made me a little nervous. However, with every day that has passed since registering last fall, the Big Ride event has inspired me. There has been much excitement with the purchase of a new bike, falling with my new cleats (not just once, but several times), and most recently cutting off most of my hair and donating it to Wigs for Kids.

To date, I have raised over $10,000 for the ALA with the tremendous support of many, many people during my letter campaign, massage events, auction, and training! With my husband as my biggest supporter, and my dad now participating as a crew member on the ride, I want to thank everyone who has contributed time, energy, heart, and dollars to such an extraordinary fund-raising event. Together we will help many people to breathe more easily.
