GORP Travel Contributor: Christine Loomis
Biography
Christine Loomis has traveled across the U.S. and in Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, South America, Europe, and the South Pacific with and without her children. Among her favorite family adventures: More than 30,000 miles by RV criss-crossing America for weeks at a time, and spending a month exploring France and Italy by train, boat, van, bicycle, and foot (with a self-drive boat in the canals of southern France being the highlight). Christine, whose children are now 18, 21, and 27, is the author of three family-travel guidebooks, Fodor's Family Adventures, Fodor's Around Denver with Kids, and Simplify Family Travel. She writes for publications including AAAEncompass, Creators Syndicate, Desert Golf Magazine, Colorado Golf Magazine, Westways, and Diversion among others, is a former editor on staff at Parents and Family Life magazines, and former editor-in-chief of Scientific American's Explorations. Christine believes that travel offers nearly endless possibilities for engaging families. It can make learning not just fun but exciting and it helps promote understanding between diverse peoples and cultures. Her advice to every family with kids of any ages exploring the world: Don’t be afraid to go off the beaten path, take time to meet local people, spend as little time in hotel rooms as possible, schedule do-nothing time, and eat at local restaurants. Most important of all, communicate to kids that going anywhere with an open and curious mind will always lead to a richer experience. Christine Loomis's Photo GalleriesChristine Loomis's Articles
