On the face of it, this seems like quite a simple conundrum to solve: pitch your tent on the flattest patch of earth available, one free of rocks, roots, and debris like pine cones. You might be tempted to pitch under that nice shady oak tree, but remember that creates a potential for falling objects as well as a concentrated conduit for rain drip-dripping above your head all night should the weather turn. Also, trees have a habit of spoiling the rain fly with sap and other critters falling out of the branches above. Generally, look for a spot with a little more exposure for morning sun and light to dry things out. However, you may want to camp nearer the trees if you're in a particularly windy spot; alternatively, look for depression in the landscape or large boulders behind which to find shelter from the elements. Other considerations? Look for a spot with higher elevation for better drainage, as well as protection from sudden flash flooding. Consider where you're going to set your campfire and make sure the prevailing wind won't blow all that smoke back into your tent. Make camp as close to sources of water and firewood as possible. Other seasonal considerations can change these calculation, but hopefully the above will give you a good start on your nighttime comfort!
