Week-Long Backpacking Trip In Smoky Mountain National Park Suggestions
My friends and I are planning a week-long backpacking trip in Smoky Mountain National Park in September 2012 and I wanted to know if anybody out there can recommend a 50 - 60 mile loop hike that would provide a backcountry campsite at the end of each day. If anybody out there can provide trail names and campsite information it would be very much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Wow, that sounds ambitious. I've done a few hikes in the Smokies, but nothing of that length. Backpacker.com lists a 50-mile trip that might fit the bill. Starting out from Alum Cave, off the Newfoundland Gap Road, you hook up onto a section of the AT and traverse peaks including Mount Sequoyah and Mount Guyot, before looping back along the NC/TN border and down toward Greenbrier Cove and the Little Pigeon River. There's a 20-mile shuttle required at end, so not quite a complete loop. Should be a great adventure, though!
