One of my favorite trails near my home in Upland is the one that winds up the front of the San Gabriel Mtns above Cucamonga Canyon. Also known as the Sapphire Falls access ....this has been closed since late August. I enjoyed going up into the high country via that trail for years and then I saw it was shut down, ostensibly due to fire risks. I have never SEEN a fire there and we have certainly had drought years before. My suspicion is that it was closed more because of the extreme vandalism by gang bangers who tag any open rock face with territorial graffiti. I hated seeing all that crap and I think the Rancho Cucamonga Police should have stepped up and done their jobs of patrolling that canyon access road at night. Surely with a nominal effort they could have 'discouraged' visits by these vandals and allowed the Canyon to stay open. But all my speculation aside-----please tell me when I will again be able to return to hike this trail. Above the Y intersection that leads down to the Falls....it affords solitude and scenery that are quite enjoyable....and its a great hike for exercise ! I miss it ..... Thanks Gary Radin (Upland)

I am a leader of a Boy Scout Troop in Central Pa. We enjoy hike on the Appalachian Trial in the spring and the fall but have tried to shy away from staying at the shelters mostly due to them filling up and a concern on who might be at the shelter. We were camping this past weekend and wanted to go to a camping site that we were at before but when we arrived their we found a no camping and no fire sign at the site. It was now later in the afternoon and the rain was coming in so we camped there but did not light a fire. I thought the rules were that you could camp anywhere along the trail, even on State Game Land as long as you were no more than 200 feet from the trail.
