Ingrid, there are plenty of camping options within Adirondacks State Park, although many of these require a hike from the trailhead. The camping around Lake Colden is particularly popular, offering a good base from which many hikers can then light out into the High Peaks. Perhaps one of your best bets is the Wilderness Campground at Adirondak Loj, a facility that's run by the Adirondack Mountain Club. More info here: http://www.adk.org/ad_loj/. This location offers you easy access to the Van Hoevenberg Trail via Marcy Dam (camping is also available here, albeit more primitive in first-come, first-serve lean-to's and select camping spots). Here's a pretty good description of the hike up to Mount Marcy on the Van Hoevenberg Trail: http://www.highpeaksclimbing.com/ADKS/Marcy/MarcyRoute001.htm.
